52 project – a portrait of logan, once a week, every week, in 2014

just when i’m about to mention that my toddler’s gone crazy, like what i imagine to be the terrible two kind, she went and got all cute and well behaved on me this past weekend. so much so that we swam to our hearts content, ignored naps, ate french fries under the covers, and slurped popsicles and watched movies well beyond bedtime, all in an effort to savoir the weekend as long as we possibly could. damn, this kid knows how to lay it on thick! while parenting has become more interesting and definitely tests our patience as of late, we love this spirited chick even on her worst days. i look at all the moody meltdowns and lashing out tantrums as a girl just trying to find herself.

things worth remembering about 27 months…

she still loves books and these days i either catch her in front of her shelf surrounded by books or beside her babies in the womb chair reciting her favorite stories. without a doubt her current favorite is alexander and the terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day.

she’s into eating apples and now requests snacks on her own. particularly chocolate bunnies and animal cookies.

gone are the days of the sleep sack. we’ve moved on to snoozing with a pillow and duvet.

however paci’s are definitely a big girl necessity. her words i swear.

she’s memorized how to spell her name and recites ‘l o g a n spells logan’ over and over all day long.

she knows the difference between her right and left hands and feet.

ice age was a huge hit and lo thinks manny is an elephant. however planes has quickly become her most recent go to flick. with harry potter as a close runner up.

we’ve officially started to administer the wicked time-out.

she’s into drinking water from an adult glass with a fancy straw. which quickly turns into a game of dunking and licking the straw dry while making a massive mess.

she’s suddenly become afraid of the vacuum.

she designates any ‘baby’ toys laying around as drue’s. and also makes it clear that ‘drue not my cousin, she my brudder.’

she knows that red means stop and green means go. and if we see a moving car in the street we have to stop and be careful.

she’s begun to imaginary play with dolls, figurines and the like.

she isn’t shy and warms up to anyone almost immediately. although she definitely has her favorites.

has started cutting her two year molars.

still sleeping like a champ. and extra long these days thanks to said molars.

we flew south last week to visit with family in florida. this was logan’s seventh + eight flights and we haven’t flown in almost a years time. while she costs a pretty penny these days and needs a ton of entertainment, flying with a toddler was cake. the season of wrangling a baby on our laps and shushing over loud cries is over. (for now at least). our days were spent in the sun by the water and our nights on the patio with bbq and cold brews. pretty perfect if you ask us. we did however make a slight detour. with a small toddler in tow and the magic kingdom a car ride away, it only seemed right to make a quick trip to the happiest place on earth. it was magical! even through the painstaking heat, vetoed stroller meltdowns and constant requests for the infamous paci. our girl rocked it as long as her little body possibly could. she met the mouse himself and was baffled that ‘big mickey don’t talk’. she gushed over merida’s gorgeous locks and asked where the ‘little teddy’s’ were. she was chosen as boo on the big screen at the monster inc laugh floor and stole the audiences hearts when she played along and followed mike’s ques. and she made all my disney dreams come true when she sat by my side in awe of all the children around the globe and left singing ‘it’s a small world’. while i had high hopes of savoring every last minute and sticking it out until the park closed, this trip proved just how magical this place is with a kid and i’m already excited to return for more. maybe mid-winter next time.

this kid continues to kill us with cuteness. i mean look her face. how could you not kiss those cheeks one million times a day?! we’re obsessed with lo’s chatty and inquisitive personality and enjoying every minute of this independent age. a lull in conversation is rare to come by these days and more often than not we find ourselves biting our tongues and holding back hysterics when we really should be disciplining her majesty. curious as ever, logan wants to know everybody’s name, and what it is that they’re doing, and where it is that they’re going, and where their mommy is, and ??? no matter who or what you are, logan wants to know all there is before chilling out and won’t take no for an answer. speaking of no, it’s a favorite word of choice and one we’re slowly working on editing out. the girl knows what she wants and isn’t afraid to speak her mind. i can’t say i blame her, as i wonder where she gets it. long story short, at twenty-six months we’re alive and active as ever. all three of us that is. all schedules have fallen by the wayside, we’re almost always on the go leaving the stroller and paraphernalia behind, occasionally cautiously dining out, and most recently us big kids have started diving back into our beloved individual hobbies on a more regular basis. life has become familiar again and i’m loving this sweet season of ours.

this little nugget turns two tomorrow. two! and to my disbelief, the nostalgia isn’t nearly as painful as it was last year. while i miss my teeny sweet baby, i adore the little sassy human this toddler’s turning into. having a built in bestie has proved to be the absolute best and is only getting better as each month passes. that said, i’m making a tradition out of our birthday date. so tomorrow, just her and i, doing whatever she well pleases. of course followed up with balloons, cupcakes and the rest of her gang to top off the festivities. there may even be a surprise visit from the ‘big elephant’ she’s been requesting for weeks (wink, wink). happy birthday baby girl!

the speed at which this baby is taking on the world shocks me daily. who knew in just a few short months i’d be having full blown conversations with this once little ball of chub. it’ happened all too fast. at twenty-three months the countdown to two is on. logan’s current favorites, to list a few…

fish. any + all breeds. although one particular clown fish seems to be an absolute favorite.
cake, as always. requested for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
sleeping like a full blown teenager, spending seventy five percent of her days snoozing.
drawing circles and lines with my prisma colors. she’s got good taste in materials.
the color black.
memorizing the pages of her favorite stories.
riding rody, the minute she’s released from her crib.
dancing to anything with a beat. which looks more like walking super fast in circles.
eating nothing. at all.
milk. the warm kind.
brushing her ‘teef’. actually maybe just sucking down the paste.
moisturizing her lips. applied as often as i allow.
drue, her adorable baby cuz.

this is lo in all her glory. approaching two at the speed of light. and as you know, i’m super nastalgic and this is shocking my system. i yearn for my teeny baby and spend a good half hour each night scrolling though her history. she gives me a fever. you know the kind. but then every now and then, when the timing is just right, i snap a picture that brings ease to my madness. that there last one is a perfect example. while we’re aware of our paci problems, that plastic crutch right there makes my almost two year old look like the quiet little chubby cheeked babe that originally stole my heart. and that, puts a huge smile on this mamas face.

twenty-one months, and oh so on fire! we no longer live with a baby, as this girl is a full blown communicating human at this point. she blows our minds on a daily basis and definitely keeps us on our toes. it’s a good thing she sleeps long and hard, cause she’s crazy bonkers otherwise. i feel like it’s been forever since i’ve written about this girl, or maybe it’s just the amount i have to report on…
– logan recognizes emotions and isn’t shy to call someone out as being happy or sad.
– logan has become bossy and isn’t afraid to tell you to ‘sit down’.
– logan has taken to pretending she’s a puppy and we often find her crawling around the house panting.
– logan’s response to almost any question is ‘ok, sure’. it’s pretty much the most adorable thing ever!
– logan is suddenly obsessed with the cowboy hat her cousins bought for her over the summer at the medicine hat stampede. unfortunately it’s now a tad too small but that doesn’t stop her from wearing it e v e r y w h e r e.
– logan has a few favorite ‘shows’ that are on constant rotation in our home. ‘ticket boy’ (polar express), ‘mike’ (monsters university) and ‘cars’ (cars).
– logan is into smelling everything which she follows up with a fake sneeze and then blesses herself. silly-head!
– logan still loves books and has taken to hoarding them in her teepee for hours. try and join her and she’ll tell you ‘no fit’.
– logan often requests ‘hold you’ when she wants to be cuddle. sure kid! i’ll take it as long as i can.
– logan has broken the silence on withholding her name. primarily to inform you of what’s hers and not to be tampered with.
– logan often gets antsy in the car. i distract her by asking her to look for animals outside. interestingly enough, no matter where we are, she always sees two zebras.
– logan is still gaga over drawing + stickers. although she occasionally takes it off paper, i can’t help but smile when i find a random scribble here and there.
– logan has befriended an electronic kitty named ginger who she chats with daily.
– logan still has no hair and i have n o t  given her a trim!

there must be something in the air. every mama i turn to on the internet and every mama friend i talk to in real life (thank you jess) seems to be currently bitten by the dreaded bug of overwhelming chaos and all its associated guilt. i’d like to think this crazy time of year has something to do with it and only hope the new year will bring some breathing room along with it. however, i’m currently up against making some decisions that will snatch me away from what little time i have all alone with my baby girl to begin with. my heart’s heavy and compiling the images for this twenty month post laid on the guilt quite thick late last night. this baby is transforming into a little person at lightening speed month-to-month and i don’t want to miss a beat. her vocabulary and personality have left me missing her more when we’re apart and anticipating our time together on a whole new level. she’s growing from my baby into my smallest friend. so while i take the holidays to hash out my thoughts, i’m also signing off from this here space and life’s responsibilities in general. this holiday is for tickling, coloring and eating all of the french fries. in the end, you gotta do what you gotta do, as it really all is for this munchkins best interest. or at least that’s what i keep telling myself to ease the pain (wink).

wishing you all the most happiest holiday!
